Looking for an office?

With the discontinuation of its regular print edition, the community newspaper & web site Eat the State! is also giving up its office space arrangement in which it has shared U-District office space (a large, carpeted room in a floor full of activist nonprofits) with Peace Action of Washington. Hence, PAW is now looking for a new co-tenant. If you know of a small political nonprofit that would like some cheap, convenient office digs, e-mail me at geov@peaceactionofwa.org. Thanks!

Remember Afghanistan?

You’d never know it from US media coverage (or lack thereof), but the US military is still engaged in two separate wars at the same time, still killing lots of civilians who happen to be in the wrong place (their homes) at the wrong time (whenever Americans are in the same time zone), and still getting its butts kicked:

A SAFER WORLD does not come from bombing people halfway around the world. It comes when all have food, water, clothing, hope, a say in their future. It comes when the common aspirations and needs of all human beings are recognized and respected.

ORDINARY CITIZENS never start wars, but we can stop them. The overwhelming public sentiment in Washington State opposes the war in Iraq. That sentiment needs to be transformed into public policy. And the same concerns that fuel opposition to America's current war need to be applied to wasteful military spending, nuclear weapons, a prospective military strike on Iran, and much more. All of these are acts of theft, against our personal and collective futures and against our vision of the ideals we want our country to uphold.

PEACE ACTION OF WASHINGTON is a secular, statewide lobbying and citizen action group working to end the disastrous war in Iraq and the addiction to militarism that makes it possible. We do so with the understanding that it's often a slow process that begins when each of us resolves to make a difference. We change ourselves, we change our communities, and on a good day we change the world. We're creative, we work hard, and sometimes we lose; sometimes, our victories are in the policies never enacted for fear of public opposition. And sometimes, we rock the house. Or House.

ENDING A WAR IS NEVER EASY. It takes time, energy, and perseverance. But it can be done -- and you can help. Every little bit makes a difference. And we each feel better when we're not passive, when we take peace action. Plus, it's a lot more fun than you'd think.

GET INVOLVED. We want to have an active, visible, coordinated presence for peace in every community and neighborhood in our state! Help us create a better, more peaceful and just world. Decisions are being made each day which affect the lives of millions, including each of us. We can all help make those decisions!
